Volunteer Opportunities

Water Quality

  • Data Entry Help our water quality program by entering data into our database. An opportunity to become familiar with the trends and problem areas in our watershed and brush up on your excel or database skills. ~2 hours/month
  • Water quality sample collection Collect water quality samples on one of our sampling routes. Long term commitment required. Monday mornings every other week, around 3 hours.
  • Data Analysis Take a closer look at the data that has been collected since 2000. Anything interesting or worthy of more investigation? Can you do a better job of summarizing the data?

Office Organization

  • Office Library SDCWC has a collection of books, project reports, and other materials that are of interest to our partners and participants. We'd love to have these organized and cataloged with a check out system (Even just a clipboard sign-out sheet) that allowed people to take materials home. Sounds like fun!
  • Educational Materials and Fliers Our educational fliers are somewhat organized, but not in an easily accessible manner. Can you improve the situation and sort the rest of the fliers?
  • General Tidying Put shelves on bookcases, find homes for extra monitors, put up posters, help clean

Fun and Events

  • Lead an excursion We all need to enjoy our watershed more! Going for a hike, kayak, or bike ride? Make it a watershed council event! Here are the general steps: 1) Choose an appropriate activity and date 2) Invite people (work with the coordinator on this.) Include when/where/what, what gear is needed and physical difficulty, and a hook- like "see spring wilflowers" or "paddle by restoration site." 3) Talk to people directly to make sure folks will come. 4) Make sure that everyone signs the waiver form and is prepared appropriately 5) Have fun!
  • Help with a special event The council has several special events throughout the year, such as a fundraiser brunch, Earthday, or summer picnic. We very much need your help with these and can find something appropriate to your availability/comfort/experience level.
  • Instigate a volunteer event Want to get your hands dirty? Organize a planting, restoration site maintenance, invasive species pull, or trash cleanup! Steps are similar to leading an excursion with the addition of making sure you have the right tools, some of which the council has on hand. Also good to get these published in the papers with 2 weeks advance notice. There are several sites that need some help- just ask.
  • Participate! Join our mailing list to be notified of events and volunteer days. To join, send an email to general-subscribe@salmondrift.org . General meetings are usually the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 in our office.

Organizational Support

  • Board Membership We are always seeking interested candidates for SDCWC governing board. Make decisions affecting the council and take a more active role in the organization. Elections are in February of each year.
  • Committees Volunteer to help with a committee: Fundraising, Activities, Tech Team, Special Events. Time commitment varies, but we can work with what you have to offer.

Website, photos, etc

  • Website work Our website is functional, but it could be more beautiful! If you have professional level skills and would like to offer a facelift, contact us.
  • Photo management We have lots of digital photos. Help organize them and tag the best ones. Add to our slideshow.
  • News Clippings Organize our newsclippings file, scan them, and/or collect clippings of any articles related to the watershed council. We regularly submit articles and announcements to the Oregon Coast Today, the News Guard, and to the Newport News Times.
